Vita-Mix Prune Puree Provides More Energy and Helps Keep Away Edema, Inflammation, and Arthritis Symptoms
By Bonnie O’Sullivan
I read an article in Reader’s Digest (Health Secrets to Living Longer, “A Sweet Way to Stay Strong,” page 63, July 2009), which is about how eating prunes, “One of the World’s Healthiest Foods,” may help women maintain strong, healthy bones throughout their lives (the article is reprinted on the next page).
It made perfect sense to me and I started eating prunes every morning. I quickly noticed I had more energy. That was good enough for me to keep eating prunes (along with the hope that it works to prevent bone loss in humans as it did in animal studies).
However, the prunes were causing me to have lots of noise (gurgling and popping noises) coming from my intestinal tract all day.
My husband, Dale, suggested I puree the prunes in our Vita-Mix to find out if that would stop the noise (he thought the noise meant I was not digesting the prunes properly and they were fermenting in my large intestine).
Dale was right! As soon as I started drinking pureed prunes (pitted prunes soaked in distilled water and pureed in a Vita-Mix) the noise stopped. But that’s not all… my energy got even better and I started urinating three times as much (not more often — three times the volume) throughout the day as I normally do. That meant that inflammation and edema were leaving my body; my urine output was normal again in three days and the inflammation and edema have not returned. I didn’t know it before, but I had edema throughout my body, especially around my waist, and it’s gone now.
This led to no more finger joint pain. I have been concerned about one of my little finger joints. Two years ago, right after it felt like I was stung by a bee right on top of the joint (it wasn’t a bee sting — it was an arthritis attack), it became red, swollen and bent out of shape (and has stayed bent). Since then, whenever I ate or drank acidic foods like tomatoes, vinegar, soda, etc., the joint got red, swelled up and was painful (when I mentioned this to my doctor he said I have arthritis and it will get worse the older I get).
Since I started drinking three pureed prunes every morning — even on days when I eat tomatoes and salad dressing that contains vinegar — my little finger joint has not been red or swollen and has been pain-free.
When I researched natural cures for arthritis I learned that arthritis is often worsened by the stress on the body of poor food digestion as well as poor pH (acid-alkaline) balance, wrong dietary choices or the presence of high levels of free radicals. However, no where did I find the recommendation to eat prunes to balance the acid in the body, reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis symptoms.
Vita-Mix Makes Food Particles Small Enough For The Body To Use at the Cellular Level
By Bonnie O’Sullivan
Do you feel satisfied after eating your meals? Or do you crave something sweet, fatty, and/or crunchy, such as ice cream, pie, cheese cake, or chips? Is this craving preventing you from weighing what you want to weigh or causing you to have candida overgrowth problems (vaginal yeast infections, Athlete’s foot, jock itch)?
With such quick success in balancing the acid in my body, reducing my inflammation and relieving my arthritis symptoms (it happened in three days) by eating pureed prunes, I decided I was on to something and began to puree vegetables as well. I didn’t expect anything more than I was already getting from the prunes — I just thought if pureed prunes gave me more energy and helped my arthritis, maybe I could make pureed vegetables taste good too. I hadn’t thought of doing this before, even though I should have, because…
(1) For 12 years I’ve heard Dale recommend the Vita-Mix to the people he counsels (many are using Dr. Kelley’s enzyme formula, PEP, and coffee enemas to rid themselves of cancer). We often get reports from people after they start using a Vita-Mix telling us they feel better and have stopped losing weight. This is because the Vita-Mix purees help to stop a syndrome called cachexia (pronounced “ka-kek-see-ah”), which is a muscle wasting condition that kills cancer patients — cancer cells rob the body of its nutrition, producing steady weight loss. Often patients die from malnutrition rather than from the cancer itself. When the body is well nourished and has plenty of enzymes it has the energy to destroy cancer cells.
(2) I’ve watched Dale use his Vita-Mix daily — a fresh fruit mixture every morning and a vegetable and rice mixture during the day — and he has continued to have good, steady energy all day, every day (and, by the way, no arthritis) for the 20 years I’ve known him. (I enjoy a cup of his fruit mixture once in awhile, but I don’t enjoy the spices in his vegetable and rice puree.)
(3) Seven years ago I started making vegetable broth (cooking vegetables in distilled water, throwing away the vegetables, and drinking the broth). I learned about this from Dr. Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. It is called Dr. Rau’s Alkaline Soup Recipe, which he recommends for reducing inflammation and strengthening bones.
I started drinking the broth for the minerals as I can’t take mineral supplements (I took mineral supplements daily for 40 years, but I had to stop when I noticed they were causing white flaky spots on my skin that got so bad they were even on my face. The spots went away when I started drinking the broth). I’ve been drinking a quart of the broth every morning with wonderful results — I have good bone density for my age (72) and never have leg cramps at night as I did before drinking Dr. Rau’s Alkaline Soup. I love the taste — I added several flavorful vegetables to Dr. Rau’s basic recipe — and never skipped a day of drinking it.
I tried eating the vegetables — instead of tossing them out — but I didn’t notice any benefit. I mistakenly thought that chewing the vegetables and not seeing any undigested vegetable pieces in my stool meant I was thoroughly digesting them.
Now I know just making the broth — or eating vegetables — doesn’t release all the minerals in the vegetables. Or all the vitamins, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, enzymes and growth factors!
Dale inspired me to make seven day’s worth of vegetable soup puree every Sunday because on Sundays he has been cooking a big pot of fresh organic, locally grown vegetables and spices in distilled water, cooking a separate pot of brown rice, and, after everything is done, pureeing it all in our Vita-Mix (a pint at a time for two to three minutes) and mixing it all together again in another big pot, heating it to the boiling point and ladling it into quart Mason jars, sealing them, cooling them, and refrigerating them. He opens a new quart jar every day and eats a third of the jar three times a day along with two corn tortillas and one ounce of cream cheese — each time. He eats a variety of other small meals daily, too. He makes seven quarts at a time of his vegetable/rice mixture, making it easy for him to eat vegetables every day. (Before doing this he would try to find time to make vegetables and rice and puree them in the Vita-Mix a couple of times a day.)
So, on Sundays I started cooking my vegetables as I did to make broth but now I follow Dale’s procedure. I don’t throw the vegetables away anymore and I’ve been drinking a pint of my “vegetable soup puree” twice a day.
On top of the energy and edema-inflammation-arthritis relief, I’ve noticed another amazing benefit: after one week of adding pureed vegetables to my routine of drinking one cup of pureed prunes every day I gained control of my appetite! I lost the feeling of wanting to eat something sweet and fatty after I eat a meal. (Note: I drank one cup of pureed prunes daily for two weeks before adding the pureed vegetables to my diet.) And now… I’m losing weight… three pounds a week (I lost 22 pounds in October 2008 with the HCG diet — 500 calories a day and sublingual HCG — and I kept 20 pounds off, but I couldn’t lose any more weight after that).
When I first added the vegetable puree I wanted ice cream more than ever — especially in the evenings — and I ate it, but I kept drinking the purees and after a week of drinking prune puree when I wake up and vegetable puree between meals my craving for junk food left and I’m not eating as much at mealtime as before.
Before drinking pureed prunes and pureed vegetables I thought I had good digestion. I thought I had no sign of not digesting my food (only the prunes caused gas before I pureed them). However, after I ate a meal it seemed like my body did not get the message that I had eaten and I always still felt hungry and for the wrong foods. I believe eating caused me to be hungry (therefore, I did have a sign of not digesting my food, I just didn’t recognize it). Now, when I eat my meals I feel completely satisfied (meals contain 3 oz. each of 2-3 of the following: eggs, fish, meat, cheese, nuts, rice, bread, vegetables, salad, etc. that have not been pureed).
I found this sentence in a study on digestion and it got me to try amylase capsules: “When you chew your food thoroughly, your saliva releases amylase, an enzyme that helps carbohydrates to be used immediately for fuel rather than stored as fat.
For me to digest prunes, pureeing them in the Vita-Mix does the trick (no gas). But, when I puree brown rice with my vegetables I get gas, vegetables alone are okay, but with brown rice added to the vegetables I need to take two amylase capsules.
Save Money On Food Bill and Supplement Bill
Since we began using the Vita-Mix our health has improved and we have saved money on groceries and supplements (prunes and vegetables plus the Vita-Mix have proven to be far more effective than mineral or anti-oxidant supplements in improving our energy and stamina).
Dale did a presentation about getting more nutrition out of your food featuring the Vita-Mix. He had the Vita-Mix Question and Answer Guy join in to answer questions (it’s a really neat video). To watch it go to: http://tinyurl.com/l5pq7t
