Q: I can’t afford a Vita-Mix right now, can I get similar results by using my food processor or blender?

A: No other kitchen appliance has the built-in strength and durability of the Vita-Mix. The Vita-Mix can reduce fruit and vegetables to particles so small (down to the cellular level) that the work of making the nutrients available to the body is done for you. (Note from Bonnie: We have replaced many supplements by drinking prune puree and vegetable soup puree daily. The Vita-Mix will soon pay for itself.)

Q: What is whole food juice?

A: Whole food juice is the combination of the juice and fiber from either fruits or vegetables prepared in the Vita-Mix machine. The speed and tremendous force of the Vita-Mix Super 5200 stainless steel blade tips travel at 240 m.p.h. at high speed and the customized hammermill and cutting blades literally pulverize food down to the cellular level. All the vitamins, enzymes, and nutrition comes to you intact with full flavor in Vita-Mix whole food juice.

Q: Why is a Vita-Mix juice better than extracted juice?

A: Vita-Mix juice includes both the juice and pulp from your produce. The pulp contains valuable nutrition that is missing in extracted juice. Vita-Mix juice helps make it easy to get the FDA recommended 5 to 7 servings of fruits and vegetables we need daily for a healthy diet.

Q: Can extracted juice be made in the Vita-Mix machine?

A: Yes, extracted juice can be made in the Vita-Mix machine by straining the whole food juice through cheesecloth. An added bonus is that clean-up is so much easier than a juice extractor!

Q: Do Vita-Mix juice recipes require adding liquid when making juice?

A: Yes, when making juice in the Vita-Mix machine water and/or ice is added.

Q: Can I just throw in any whole fruits and vegetables?

A: Indiscriminate combination of fruits and vegetables can produce results that do not taste good. The Vita-Mix machine comes with the Recipes for Better Living Cookbook which includes over 300 kitchen-tested recipes.

Q: How can you make chunky soup in the Vita-Mix machine?

A: Start with last night’s leftovers! For example, take a few strips of cooked chicken or a small baked potato and add them to your smooth Vita-Mix soup using the variable speed setting #1. Chop and mix for just a few seconds for a hearty chunky soup.

Q: How is whole wheat ground in the Vita-Mix machine?

A: The Vita-Mix Whole Grains Cookbook recommends grinding 1¾ cups of whole kernel wheat berries at a time, which is the amount it takes to make a loaf of bread. For further instructions, refer to the Whole Grains Cookbook, which is included with your Vita-Mix Super 5200 and the 32 oz. dry blade container, which can be purchased separately.

Q: Does the Vita-Mix Super 5200 bake the bread?

A: No. Our machine prepares the bread dough for rising and baking in less than 5 minutes. This time includes the time needed to grind your choice of whole grains into flour. The Vita-Mix machine will mix and knead the dough, which can be put in a bread pan to rise and bake in your oven.

Q: Can the Vita-Mix machine grind pastry-fine flour?

A: The Vita-Mix Super 5200′s variable speed control makes it possible to grind grains into many textures including the fine texture needed for pastry flour.

Q: Do some of the recipes in your cookbook address special dietary needs?

A: Included in the cookbook is a wide variety of recipes that address a broad range of eating habits. Whether you are trying to lose or gain weight, control your fat intake, have food allergies, or are simply trying to add more fruits, vegetables or soy into your diet, you will find delicious recipes you can enjoy. Check the recipe section of our website often for new recipes. Also, be certain to sign up to receive the Vita-Mix whole food lifestyle newsletter. You will get the latest nutrition news, recipes and special private offers.

Vita-Mix Usage Confession and Tips

By Bonnie O’Sullivan

We have owned our Vita-Mix Super Total Nutrition Center by since l992 (and we owned a Vita-Mix 4000 before that). We even attended a Vita-Mix seminar (it was free with the purchase of the Super Total Nutrition Center) in Sacramento, California, and I confess that I, Bonnie, never used it until June 2009.

Dale uses it daily, believes in it completely, and talks about it often to the people he counsels who are on Dr. Kelley’s Enzyme Formula (PEP) Cancer Program.

I had three reasons for not using our Vita-Mix: (1) I thought, since I don’t digest carbohydrates well I would just not eat them [how did that work out for me? — between March 1989 (142 lbs.) and October 2008 (212 lbs.) I gained 70 pounds!] and (2) I was taught that after vegetables were cooked all the minerals were in the water (broth) — and, since the Vita-Mix makes the vegetables hot (the longer you blend them the hotter they get), I thought/think that’s cooking them. So, I made vegetable soup and drank the broth and (3) I thought the Vita-Mix was too loud.

Today, I’m a Vita-Mix enthusiast and I just put in ear plugs when I use it.

Vita-Mix representatives recommend that you puree fresh fruit and vegetables in the Vita-Mix just before you consume them: For recipes from Vita-Mix look in the Vita-Mix book: Recipes for Better Living Cookbook.

A few days ago we spoke to the Vita-Mix demonstrator at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, CA. This is what works for him: every week he freezes 14 baggies containing fresh, washed fruit and vegetables so he has just what he wants all ready to pop into the Vita-Mix quickly whenever he wants a Vita-Mix puree drink.

We like having food in the refrigerator ready to eat so once a week we cook lots of vegetables in two eight quart Cookworld stainless steel pots and make vegetable soup puree in our Vita-Mix — see the recipe at the end of this letter. The vegetable soup stays fresh in the refrigerator in Mason jars. Two or three times a day we heat the vegetable puree in a Cookworld sauce pan. Twice a week I make prune puree, put it in Mason jars and keep it in the refrigerator and Dale makes his fruit medley puree puts it in Tupperware, keeps two day’s worth in the refrigerator and freezes the rest. The prunes and fruit medley purees we drink first thing in the morning.

Bonnie’s Vita-Mix Recipes

Bonnie’s Vita-Mix Prune Puree

You can make a few day’s worth of pureed prunes at a time. Mix 12 pitted prunes with one quart boiling distilled water, let them sit for five minutes to soften the prunes, and puree the mixture in the Vita-Mix (start out on low speed and as the prunes are broken up, gradually turn the Vita-Mix up to high and keep it on high for two minutes). Pour two cups into two pint size Mason jars (be careful to keep the lips of the jars clean) and quickly put the two-part lids on them. The heat helps the Mason jars seal tightly as they cool on the counter (when they cool the jar lids make a popping sound, which means they are sealed). When cool, place the jars in the refrigerator. The pureed prunes will keep well unopened in the refrigerator for four to five days. Once opened, put the lid back on and put the jar with the remaining prune puree back into the refrigerator and drink it within 24 hours.

Note: Purchase prunes that do not contain potassium sorbate, a preservative that can cause adverse health effects, and keep them in the refrigerator.

Caution: After eating prunes or drinking prune puree brush your teeth, chew Xylichew gum, or at least rinse your mouth well with water. All fruit contains sugar and acid. The acid varies — with lemons and limes containing the most; never suck on a lemon or a lime — and acid erodes tooth enamel. After fruit, including prunes, digest in the intestinal tract (which is helped tremendously by pureeing them in a Vita-Mix) the alkaline minerals they contain are released and they are the ones that balance the acid in the body (this is true of vegetables, too).

Bonnie’s Vita-Mix Gourmet Vegetable Soup Puree

In a large stainless steel pot combine: Six quarts of distilled water and the following washed, cut up vegetables (organic when available): Two large Jewel sweet potatoes, 6 small or 8 large zucchini squash, ½ large head of red cabbage, two large stalks of celery (celery makes the cabbage not smell bad), one large bunch of parsley (after cutting it up with scissors put it into a large baggie and pour distilled water into the baggie and shake well, drain into a colander, and repeat until all sand is removed), one pound of carrots, one pound green beans, three large leeks, two bunches green onions, one pound of frozen unsalted peas (add or subtract any vegetables you want, the goal is to enjoy the taste of the pureed soup). (Some enjoy added cilantro and/or spices.)

Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for one hour with lid on.

Ladle one pint at a time (? vegetables & ? broth) into Vita-Mix container and puree for two to three minutes on high speed (working up to high gradually).

Pour each pureed pint into another large stainless steel pot and, after all the vegetables and broth have been pureed, stir it all together in the pot and heat.

Ladle hot puree into seven or eight (if you drink some puree you’ll only have seven quarts) quart Mason jars, seal tightly, allow to cool, and place in refrigerator (our experience is to use within one week after refrigerating).

For variety we often mix cooked, pureed brown rice with this vegetable soup puree (I need two amylase capsules when I eat the brown rice/vegetable puree as I have gas pains if I don’t) and, occasionally, we enjoy the soup with a cup of homemade chicken stock mixed in (we make chicken stock by boiling chicken bones in the drippings and water. The bone marrow contains a lot of nutrients).

Dale did a presentation about getting more nutrition out of your food featuring the Vita-Mix.

By Sandra Petry (Bonnie O’Sullivan’s daughter)

First Diagnosis: Neuralgia Inducing Cavitational Osteonecrosis (NICO), Chronic Osteomyelitis and Ischemic Osteonecrosis

In 2001 I saw multiple doctors who diagnosed me as having acid reflux disease, fibromyalgia, lymph edema, candida overgrowth, even somatic nervous disorder (where there is physical pain but no evidence of organic damage — in other words “it’s all in your head”), and so on, but could not relieve my whole body pain and swelling, painful blisters between my toes and on the bottoms of my feet that aren’t Athlete’s foot, excruciating heel pain, canker sores in my mouth, and depression.

Finally, in September of 2001, I became a patient of a doctor who knew what was causing my symptoms. He diagnosed me as having Neuralgia Inducing Cavitational Osteonecrosis or NICO (a hidden jawbone infection that causes pain in other areas of the body), Chronic Osteomyelitis (an inflammatory process of the bone secondary to infection with bacteria, such as staphylococci, streptococci, and others), and Ischemic Osteonecrosis (bone death due to poor blood supply). These bone diseases are best known as diseases of the hip and treated by replacing the hip, but I had them in my jawbone.

(Note: Tetracycline prescribed to me when I was a baby caused me to have brittle, discolored teeth (at the gum line) that eventually fractured and allowed bacteria to infect my jawbone causing Chronic Osteomyelitis, Ischemic Osteonecrosis and NICO. Now, in TV ads for Fosamax, an osteoporosis drug that causes brittle teeth in some people, this disclaimer is given: “In rare cases Fosamax may cause a painful and serious jaw disease.” What disease? Osteomyelitis of the jawbone!)

As soon as I was accepted as a new patient by my doctor he referred me to my dentist for cavitation removal. At the time I was in a long process of having all of my tetracycline-damaged teeth extracted — several teeth had had their roots split during repairs and one dentist put a bovine bone implant in my jawbone that my body rejected and that caused tremendous pain and trouble — three US oral surgeons tried, but couldn’t remove it, but one in Mexico, Dr. R. Villafana, finally did (Dr. Villafana has since operated successfully in every area of my jawbone).

[Note: A cavitation is a hollow space or pocket in the bone where a bacterial infection hides and destroys the surrounding bone because it is protected from the bloodstream by a layer of bone that grows over the pocket after a tooth is extracted. The initiating factor is trauma to the jaw, often brought on by standard dental treatment. The infection is not visible to the eye and does not cause local discomfort such as inflammation, redness, fever, or pus, but often causes pain in areas other than the face (though it can be the hidden cause of facial pain).]

The doctor explained that the cavitations in my jawbone were “focus” infections. A focus infection is a walled-off area of concentrated toxins (that seep into the body), necrotic (dead) bone (which blocks the flow of blood through the bone marrow and causes the jawbone to have a poor blood supply) and infected tissue, all of which causes swelling and pain in other areas of the body (called NICO), and, unless all the infected and dead bone is removed, the bone will not heal.

The doctor sadly explained that people do not usually recover from NICO, Chronic Osteomyelitis, or Ischemic Osteonecrosis of the jawbone as, even after extensive oral surgery to scrape away the infected and dead bone, these conditions often come back. (I think most people do not want to have the multiple, painful oral surgeries that are necessary and that’s why many people do not usually recover.)

The doctor’s opinion of the prognosis of my illness did not sit well with me, my mom or my step-dad, Dale. They encouraged, supported, and accompanied me as I explored every avenue we read about or heard of in order to recover my health.

Today, after eight years of multiple oral surgeries, four three month stints on IV antibiotics administered daily through a PIC line in my arm up into my heart, and four month-long 90 minute to two-hour daily treatments in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber (I had one of each one in June 2009) I finally feel I have gotten rid of the infection and dead bone in my jawbone.

However, at the end of June I was feeling more and more depressed…

Second Diagnosis: Liver Toxicity

Throughout the years as well as having bacterial toxins seeping into my body for many years, I have also been prescribed and have taken pain pills, anti-anxiety pills, pills for depression, and had the maximum anesthetic medications administered to me during excruciatingly painful oral surgeries when I wasn’t getting numb. These medications left me with a severely toxic liver. Over the past 1½ years I have stopped taking them, but now I have a severely toxic liver.

My symptoms of liver toxicity are painful swelling of the breasts and pain on the left and right sides of my body in the lower rib area, and a bruised and full tightness of the area just under the lower curve of my bottom ribs on the right side of my body. I often have headaches, a bitter and metallic taste in my mouth, dry mouth, and a craving for sour foods: green apples, lemons and vinegar. I’m tired all the time, irritable, easily upset, short tempered, and trivial things often bring me to tears. I don’t exercise because the tightness or swelling around my breasts and waist becomes excruciatingly painful and I get bruises when I exercise. I also have yellow-green mucus in the corners of my eyes when I wake up.

These symptoms are all associated with liver toxicity, but I understand there are many more that I do not have, for which I am thankful.

Relief Came in July 2009

A miracle occurred in my life in July 2009. On June 22, 2009, the same day my mom received her July issue of Reader’s Digest, she began a regime that gave her tremendous energy and three days after she began using the Vita-Mix her inflammation, edema, and arthritis symptoms were gone. And three weeks later she also began losing excess pounds without dieting.

I decided to try her method to see if my fatigue, pain and swelling would be relieved even though every nutritional thing I have tried over the last eight years has failed and some even caused me to feel much, much worse.

I am so happy to report that I am feeling better. The most impressive and heartening result is that my depression lifted immediately. My personality has improved so much that I can hardly believe it’s me. I’m feeling happy, much more helpful, and pleasant. My pain and swelling has improved (every day it feels better for a while and then gets bad again, but not as bad as it was the day before).

As well as drinking pureed prunes (I drink it hot and I think tastes better than coffee) and vegetable soup puree every day, I’m taking six Candida-G and six Flora-G Plus capsules every day to keep my intestinal flora healthy.

To help my bowels stay regular I also take Jim Foley’s Colon Pills. I take four capsules per day and they really make a difference — if I don’t take them, and don’t have my regular bowel movements, I get a headache.

I realize I have a long way to go before my liver is completely healed, but I’m so excited to be feeling optimistic and cheerful after feeling so terribly low for so long that I felt I had to share this exciting chapter of my story with you.

By Janis Graham, Reader’s Digest, July 2009, Page 63

When you think of foods that keep bones strong, plums probably don’t make the list. But recent studies suggest that Prunus domestica, the small, egg-shaped plum that’s dried into prunes, is the very best fruit for bone strengthening, says researcher Bahram Arjmandi, PhD, at Florida State University, Tallahassee. In animal studies, dried plums not only prevented bone loss but also reversed it. Preliminary research in postmenopausal women suggests that plums may be just as powerful in humans (a larger, longer study is under way). What’s so special about the plum? It’s high in disease-fighting antioxidants (that reduce free radicals) and is a particularly good source of boron, potassium, and vitamin K — all of which are important for bone health. Women in the recent study ate eight to ten dried plums (aka prunes) a day, but Arjmandi suspects you’d get skeleton-strengthening benefits from as few as three. Get your fill of fresh plums now, while they’re at their peak. For the rest of the year rely on frozen, dried, or canned plums: Eat them plain, toss them into cereal and savory grain dishes, or stew with onions, garlic, and carrots, then serve alongside poultry or meat.

Research Summary

When 58 postmenopausal women ate about 12 prunes each day for 3 months, not only did none of the women suffer any adverse gastrointestinal side effects, but they were found to have higher blood levels of enzymes and growth factors that indicate bone formation than women who did not consume prunes. Researcher Baharm H. Arjmandi, PhD., RD, Professor of Nutritional Sciences and Gerontology at Oklahoma State University thinks that the beneficial effects on bone formation revealed by this study may be due to prunes’ high concentration of phenolic compounds that act as antioxidants to curb bone loss.

Not only do prunes contain large amounts of phenolic compounds (184 mg/100 g), they are also an important source of boron, a trace mineral which is thought to play an important role in the prevention of osteoporosis. Just one serving of prunes (100 g) fulfills the daily requirement for boron (2 to 3 mg).

In addition to their beneficial effects on bone health, prunes’ phenolic compounds have been found to inhibit human LDL oxidation in vitro, and thus may serve as protective agents against not only bone loss, but atherosclerosis — another chronic degenerative disease for which a woman’s risk greatly increases after menopause. In addition to their rich supply of phenols, prunes’ high potassium content (745 mg/100 g) also is protective of cardiovascular health.

Although this study only included women, researchers believe men can gain the same beneficial effects on bone and heart health from eating prunes.

The following are our suggestions.

Phytonutrients (found in the pigment of fruit and vegetables) reduce the risk of many cancers. Variety is the key, so include fruits and vegetables from all the color spectrums to ensure you get a wide range of nutrients, antioxidants and phytonutrients. Eight to nine portions per day is ideal. Five a day is not enough.

Beta-carotene is an antioxidant and immune booster. The body is able to convert it into vitamin A, which helps cells reproduce normally. Beta-carotene-rich foods include carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, and winter squash.

Lycopene is a carotenoid antioxidant that has been found to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells and may help protect against cancers of the prostate, lung, stomach, pancreas, bowel, esophagus, mouth, breast and cervix. Tomatoes and sweet red peppers are rich in lycopene. (Note: Some people are sensitive to a compound called solanine in tomatoes. If you have arthritic-like symptoms and/or joint pain, tomatoes are not a food that would be good in high amounts for your anticancer regime.)

Several anticancer compounds, such as indole-3-carbinol, glucaric acid, and sulphoraphane are abundant in the cruciferous vegetable family (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, rutabagas, turnips, bok choy, and watercress). (Note: Always add a stalk of celery to soup that includes a cruciferous vegetable as this reduces the unpleasant sulphur smell.)

Chlorophyll and sulphur are important nutrients for cleansing and rejuvenating the cells of the body. All dark leafy green foods contain chlorophyll and foods from the onion family (onions, garlic, green onions, leeks, and chives), as well as the cruciferous family, contain sulphur.

People who eat high-fiber foods, particularly those rich in insoluble fiber such as whole grains (brown rice, millet, whole-wheat bread) and cereals have been reported to have a low risk of many cancers.

Essential fatty acids are known to be protective against cancer. Dark leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds (especially chia, flax, and hemp), and unrefined vegetable oils such as flax seed oil are rich in essential fatty acids as is cold water fish oil.

Anticancer properties are found in almonds, however it is best to soak them overnight in distilled water and drain the water off before eating them (this removes the enzyme inhibitors found in the skin and makes them easier to digest). Eat a small handful of organic, soaked almonds first thing in the morning to regulate your metabolism for the rest of the day.

Vita-Mix Prune Puree Provides More Energy and Helps Keep Away Edema, Inflammation, and Arthritis Symptoms

By Bonnie O’Sullivan

I read an article in Reader’s Digest (Health Secrets to Living Longer, “A Sweet Way to Stay Strong,” page 63, July 2009), which is about how eating prunes, “One of the World’s Healthiest Foods,” may help women maintain strong, healthy bones throughout their lives (the article is reprinted on the next page).

It made perfect sense to me and I started eating prunes every morning. I quickly noticed I had more energy. That was good enough for me to keep eating prunes (along with the hope that it works to prevent bone loss in humans as it did in animal studies).

However, the prunes were causing me to have lots of noise (gurgling and popping noises) coming from my intestinal tract all day.

My husband, Dale, suggested I puree the prunes in our Vita-Mix to find out if that would stop the noise (he thought the noise meant I was not digesting the prunes properly and they were fermenting in my large intestine).

Dale was right! As soon as I started drinking pureed prunes (pitted prunes soaked in distilled water and pureed in a Vita-Mix) the noise stopped. But that’s not all… my energy got even better and I started urinating three times as much (not more often — three times the volume) throughout the day as I normally do. That meant that inflammation and edema were leaving my body; my urine output was normal again in three days and the inflammation and edema have not returned. I didn’t know it before, but I had edema throughout my body, especially around my waist, and it’s gone now.

This led to no more finger joint pain. I have been concerned about one of my little finger joints. Two years ago, right after it felt like I was stung by a bee right on top of the joint (it wasn’t a bee sting — it was an arthritis attack), it became red, swollen and bent out of shape (and has stayed bent). Since then, whenever I ate or drank acidic foods like tomatoes, vinegar, soda, etc., the joint got red, swelled up and was painful (when I mentioned this to my doctor he said I have arthritis and it will get worse the older I get).

Since I started drinking three pureed prunes every morning — even on days when I eat tomatoes and salad dressing that contains vinegar — my little finger joint has not been red or swollen and has been pain-free.

When I researched natural cures for arthritis I learned that arthritis is often worsened by the stress on the body of poor food digestion as well as poor pH (acid-alkaline) balance, wrong dietary choices or the presence of high levels of free radicals. However, no where did I find the recommendation to eat prunes to balance the acid in the body, reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis symptoms.

Vita-Mix Makes Food Particles Small Enough For The Body To Use at the Cellular Level

By Bonnie O’Sullivan

Do you feel satisfied after eating your meals? Or do you crave something sweet, fatty, and/or crunchy, such as ice cream, pie, cheese cake, or chips? Is this craving preventing you from weighing what you want to weigh or causing you to have candida overgrowth problems (vaginal yeast infections, Athlete’s foot, jock itch)?

With such quick success in balancing the acid in my body, reducing my inflammation and relieving my arthritis symptoms (it happened in three days) by eating pureed prunes, I decided I was on to something and began to puree vegetables as well. I didn’t expect anything more than I was already getting from the prunes — I just thought if pureed prunes gave me more energy and helped my arthritis, maybe I could make pureed vegetables taste good too. I hadn’t thought of doing this before, even though I should have, because…

(1) For 12 years I’ve heard Dale recommend the Vita-Mix to the people he counsels (many are using Dr. Kelley’s enzyme formula, PEP, and coffee enemas to rid themselves of cancer). We often get reports from people after they start using a Vita-Mix telling us they feel better and have stopped losing weight. This is because the Vita-Mix purees help to stop a syndrome called cachexia (pronounced “ka-kek-see-ah”), which is a muscle wasting condition that kills cancer patients — cancer cells rob the body of its nutrition, producing steady weight loss. Often patients die from malnutrition rather than from the cancer itself. When the body is well nourished and has plenty of enzymes it has the energy to destroy cancer cells.

(2) I’ve watched Dale use his Vita-Mix daily — a fresh fruit mixture every morning and a vegetable and rice mixture during the day — and he has continued to have good, steady energy all day, every day (and, by the way, no arthritis) for the 20 years I’ve known him. (I enjoy a cup of his fruit mixture once in awhile, but I don’t enjoy the spices in his vegetable and rice puree.)

(3) Seven years ago I started making vegetable broth (cooking vegetables in distilled water, throwing away the vegetables, and drinking the broth). I learned about this from Dr. Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. It is called Dr. Rau’s Alkaline Soup Recipe, which he recommends for reducing inflammation and strengthening bones.

I started drinking the broth for the minerals as I can’t take mineral supplements (I took mineral supplements daily for 40 years, but I had to stop when I noticed they were causing white flaky spots on my skin that got so bad they were even on my face. The spots went away when I started drinking the broth). I’ve been drinking a quart of the broth every morning with wonderful results — I have good bone density for my age (72) and never have leg cramps at night as I did before drinking Dr. Rau’s Alkaline Soup. I love the taste — I added several flavorful vegetables to Dr. Rau’s basic recipe — and never skipped a day of drinking it.

I tried eating the vegetables — instead of tossing them out — but I didn’t notice any benefit. I mistakenly thought that chewing the vegetables and not seeing any undigested vegetable pieces in my stool meant I was thoroughly digesting them.

Now I know just making the broth — or eating vegetables — doesn’t release all the minerals in the vegetables. Or all the vitamins, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, enzymes and growth factors!

Dale inspired me to make seven day’s worth of vegetable soup puree every Sunday because on Sundays he has been cooking a big pot of fresh organic, locally grown vegetables and spices in distilled water, cooking a separate pot of brown rice, and, after everything is done, pureeing it all in our Vita-Mix (a pint at a time for two to three minutes) and mixing it all together again in another big pot, heating it to the boiling point and ladling it into quart Mason jars, sealing them, cooling them, and refrigerating them. He opens a new quart jar every day and eats a third of the jar three times a day along with two corn tortillas and one ounce of cream cheese — each time. He eats a variety of other small meals daily, too. He makes seven quarts at a time of his vegetable/rice mixture, making it easy for him to eat vegetables every day. (Before doing this he would try to find time to make vegetables and rice and puree them in the Vita-Mix a couple of times a day.)

So, on Sundays I started cooking my vegetables as I did to make broth but now I follow Dale’s procedure. I don’t throw the vegetables away anymore and I’ve been drinking a pint of my “vegetable soup puree” twice a day.

On top of the energy and edema-inflammation-arthritis relief, I’ve noticed another amazing benefit: after one week of adding pureed vegetables to my routine of drinking one cup of pureed prunes every day I gained control of my appetite! I lost the feeling of wanting to eat something sweet and fatty after I eat a meal. (Note: I drank one cup of pureed prunes daily for two weeks before adding the pureed vegetables to my diet.) And now… I’m losing weight… three pounds a week (I lost 22 pounds in October 2008 with the HCG diet — 500 calories a day and sublingual HCG — and I kept 20 pounds off, but I couldn’t lose any more weight after that).

When I first added the vegetable puree I wanted ice cream more than ever — especially in the evenings — and I ate it, but I kept drinking the purees and after a week of drinking prune puree when I wake up and vegetable puree between meals my craving for junk food left and I’m not eating as much at mealtime as before.

Before drinking pureed prunes and pureed vegetables I thought I had good digestion. I thought I had no sign of not digesting my food (only the prunes caused gas before I pureed them). However, after I ate a meal it seemed like my body did not get the message that I had eaten and I always still felt hungry and for the wrong foods. I believe eating caused me to be hungry (therefore, I did have a sign of not digesting my food, I just didn’t recognize it). Now, when I eat my meals I feel completely satisfied (meals contain 3 oz. each of 2-3 of the following: eggs, fish, meat, cheese, nuts, rice, bread, vegetables, salad, etc. that have not been pureed).

I found this sentence in a study on digestion and it got me to try amylase capsules: “When you chew your food thoroughly, your saliva releases amylase, an enzyme that helps carbohydrates to be used immediately for fuel rather than stored as fat.

For me to digest prunes, pureeing them in the Vita-Mix does the trick (no gas). But, when I puree brown rice with my vegetables I get gas, vegetables alone are okay, but with brown rice added to the vegetables I need to take two amylase capsules.

Save Money On Food Bill and Supplement Bill

Since we began using the Vita-Mix our health has improved and we have saved money on groceries and supplements (prunes and vegetables plus the Vita-Mix have proven to be far more effective than mineral or anti-oxidant supplements in improving our energy and stamina).

Dale did a presentation about getting more nutrition out of your food featuring the Vita-Mix.
Vita-Mix is a Major Part of My Recovery from Cancer and Heart Disease

By Tom S, IL, November 2002

Vita-Mix receives many compliments from satisfied users, but I wonder how many can say that whole foods prepared in their Vita-Mix actually helped save their life? I’m writing to tell you how strongly I believe it has been a major part of a near miraculous recovery from concurrent bouts with advanced cancer and heart disease.

In November 2000 I was simultaneously diagnosed with malignant melanoma and heart disease. The cancer was already at stage IV in the lymph system. The heart diagnosis showed 100% blockage in two arteries and 70% blockage in the other two. Six bypasses and three cancer surgeries followed in the next 32 days. The cancer and heart physicians wanted to put me on chemotherapy — interferon — a draconian treatment with minimal success rates.

I believed that God would heal the cancer and chose natural treatments instead of chemo or radiation. At first I tried chewing my way through the health maze, but it takes a special person who can sit long enough to eat more than one raw carrot. So I transitioned to juicing, but each morning it took a half hour of rinsing, cutting, pushing, pulping, scraping and washing-up just to get a small glass of juice. Plus, I was throwing out the most beneficial part, the fiber.

Then I heard about Vita-Mix, first on the internet, then at the home show. Your representative and the demonstrations were terrific and I practically ran home that night to start using my new Via-Mix. For a week I experimented with heart and cancer formulas until I came up with the recipe that I now use each day. It includes healthy fruits, vegetables and supplements, tastes delicious, and actually fills me up so that I can skip an entire meal.

The results have been nothing short of miraculous. Through exercise, nutritional foods prepared in the Vita-Mix, and God’s healing grace, I’ve fully recovered from both maladies.

Now my day includes one to two Vita-Mix meals. Breakfast is a juice and veggie drink: two medium carrots, an apple, a wedge of cantaloupe, and maybe a banana or strawberry. Then a half tub of yogurt is spooned in, followed by a scoop or two of protein supplement. To help the mix, I usually pour in a cup of orange or pineapple juice, and always follow with ice cubes. Lastly, I toss in my “medications,” an aspirin and a fish oil capsule. After two minutes of mixing, I enjoy a delicious drink that feels so healthy I can picture it nourishing my body as it goes down.

It only takes 5 minutes to prepare, including the famous Vita-Mix quick rinse clean up. And if time is short, I pour it in a go-cup and drink breakfast in the car on the way to work. A Vita-Mix breakfast is thick enough to make you feel satisfied until lunch, which was never the case with juicing. In the time it took to labor through chewing one carrot, I can drink an entire medley of fruits and veggies. An additional benefit is that the drink makes nearly a half gallon, which leaves some to store in the refrigerator for later in the day. (My doctor insists that each day a fresh drink is made from “living” vegetables and no leftovers.) Vita-Mix meals are so inexpensive that our grocery bills have actually gone down and my family shops the outside aisles now instead of the prepared food sections.

The results? Heart wise, I’m back working, running, and playing tournament tennis. My weight returned to normal and blood pressure and cholesterol readings are near perfect. And the melanoma? Regular CT scans and MRIs came up with almost flawless images. Less than eight months after surgeries, I played a two day tennis tournament (at 104 degrees!) and last winter I won the racquetball league championship at our local YMCA. What a great 55th birthday present! Life and Health!

From the beginning I believed that God could — and would — take care of me. It was accomplished through His miraculous healing, exercise, and nutritional eating with my Vita-Mix. So if someone ask me, “Can whole foods prepared in the Vita-Mix help a person recover from cancer and heart disease?” — I can wholeheartedly endorse it as a major part of my recovery.

(Lunch or dinner is dairy. Skim milk, soy powder, a tub of yogurt, about half a cup of various cereal favorites, and ice cubes. These are big meals, at least 32 ounces, yet they cost less than $2.00 each. And cleanup is a quick rinse – no pulp, stains, or dried yuck. If I’m in a hurry, it can’t be beat. The third meal is anything from burgers to peanut butter to pizza. No worries, and no problems with weight.)

Vita-Mix Helps with Throat Cancer

By Michelle

My husband had throat cancer and needed pureed foods and had a feeding tube for 4 months. The Vita-Mix, I believe, was a life saver! A friend had bought it for us. My husband, Greg, could get good organic food in him to do all the repair work his body needed in an easy way. Now, he is clean, healthy and continues to make power drinks every day!

My husband continues to amaze the doctors of his speedy recovery. Greg’s body has been built back up in such a strong way that he’s healthier than he was before he got sick.

I like being able to use the whole foods in its raw state, thereby getting all the fiber, nutrients and enzymes to improve and enhance our health. The Vita-Mix saved me time—I work many hours and being able to literally throw the food in the machine and flip a switch was great! I’m a real advocate of your machine and we’ve sold many people on the machine. I’ve given many recipes out to people that own it and have given mini classes on it.

By Greg

One day during my chemo treatments, my doctor leaned over and smirked at me saying, “I don’t know what you’re doing, keep doing it!” I attribute my incredibly fast recovery and good health, to my wife Michelle research on nutrition and the Vita-Mix’s capability to process the foods for us.

When I began my Chemo treatments all I could ingest was Ensure, because until we got the Vita-Mix my feeding tube kept getting clogged. The Vita-Mix allowed me to begin eating whole foods again. The Vita-Mix also helped me while I relearned how to swallow.

Vita-Mix Helps Lower High Cholesterol

By Nancy H, MI

We are both suffering from high cholesterol, my own has been 257.

After purchasing our Vita-Mix machine I read through the booklets that came with it to see what foods would be beneficial in lowering my cholesterol level. I have used a combination of 1 cup soy milk blended with ¾ cup oats, honey to taste, and strawberries or raspberries (1/2 c). In three weeks of consuming this at breakfast, my cholesterol has come down 32 points to 224!!! It would not have happened if not for this wonderful machine that made it so very easy and fast to prepare.

Vita-Mix Helps with Arthritis

By Wilton B., Dallas, TX

I had arthritis so bad I could hardly walk. Then I started making whole food juice in the Vita-Mix. I juice oranges, apples, bananas and pineapples every day.

I juice vegetables too. Now I do not take any medications, laxatives, or anything and I have no problems walking. I have had my Vita-Mix for over 6 years and there is no comparison.

I can’t put a price on what the Vita-Mix has done for my health.

In January 1996, at age 53, my husband Gary had a heart transplant. Because of his heart transplant he has to take very strong drugs that can destroy the liver.

Using the Vita-Mix (to prepare whole foods) has helped his overall health improve dramatically. One of the biggest problems with heart transplant patients is that they gain incredible amounts of weight because of the steroids.

Gary uses the Vita-Mix everyday and he has only gained 5 pounds in the six years since his transplant. I used to use “run of the mill” mixers and wear them out and replace them.

The quality of the Vita-Mix is awesome! It cuts up, grinds and mixes beyond my husband’s expectations. He uses it 365 days a year. We’ve had our Vita-Mix for over 10 years!
